In Boston a transparent zebrafish has been developed to enable scientists to get a better idea of how cancer spreads and behaves inside the body. The fish’s entire body, including bones and internal organs, are visible throughout its life. Tests carried out at the Children’s Hospital, Boston, have shown already that the spread of cancer cells is not random, but homes in on particular areas. Before the innovation, scientists relied on snapshots and dissections of the affected areas of the skin. Due to the potentially rapid change of cancer cells, such methods were largely open to inaccuracy. However, the transparent fish allowed the whole process to be witnessed.

Zebrafish were chosen for their strong genetic similarities to human beings. Scientists hope to use the fish disrupt the spread of cancer cells in the body.
